PHYSIOTHERAPY

INITIAL ASSESSMENT: 45 minutes £65

FOLLOW-UP TREATMENT : 40 minutes £53

This is a branch of physiotherapy that deals with physical conditions unique to men. It

incorporates the use of pelvic floor assessment and rehabilitation and is a first line

treatment for urinary continence, lumbo-pelvic pain and erectile dysfunction.

Treatment may involve an individualised pelvic floor training programme, core control

exercises, manual treatment to lower back/sacrum and lifestyle advice.

These exercises are primarily known to help women but men also greatly benefit from

learning to strengthening these muscles correctly. That is why individualised assessment

and advice is key.

Men who engage with pelvic floor exercises regularly can improve bladder control and

reduce stress urinary incontinence after prostate surgery or radiotherapy. Preventing and

diminishing symptoms that may occur during prostate cancer treatment is key for quality of

life outcomes. An individualised programme may also help men with erectile dysfunction

and prevent premature ejaculation.

Benefits of pelvic floor rehabilitation for men include but are not limited to:

  • Improvement in bladder and bowel control

  • Improvement in sexual function and prostate health

  • Reduction in pelvic pain

Diagnostic labels that benefit from pelvic floor rehabilitation:

  • Prostatitis

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction

  • Urinary Frequency and urgency

  • Levator syndrome/proctalgia fugax

  • Urethral syndrome
